Sorry, for my question. What do you mean with the abbreviation ERP? I remember that ERP stands for "European Recovery Program". What is your long term for ERP?
Best regards

ERP is an abbreviation of Enterprise Resource Planning. Actually, this term is used to describe all information systems that provide functionality for every department of a company in an integrated environment. (e.g. Microsoft Navision, SAP, etc)

I'm interested in knowing how popular ERP systems are adopted in the shipping industry and how effective they could function to meet expected performance. I heard that ERP was mainly adopted in the manufacturing industry. It was not uncommon to hear cases showing unsatisfactory results of ERP implementation in that industry. Could more IT people share their views / experience about the extent of ERP adoption within the shipping sector?

I have worked on an ERP for the shipping industry called FullfillmentSCE from FWL Technologies . I have not come across shipping companies implementing SAP/People Soft etc for the core business processes. But many shipping companies have implemented the financial modules from major ERP vendors

ERP is basically a software system designed to support and automate the business processes of medium and large businesses. This may include manufacturing, distribution, personnel, project management, payroll, and financials. ERP systems are accounting-oriented information systems for identifying and planning the enterprise wide resources needed to take, make, distribute, and account for customer orders. ERP systems were originally extensions of MRP II (Manufacturing Resource Planning II) systems, but have since widened their scope. An ERP system also differs from the typical MRP II system in technical requirements such as relational database, use of object oriented programming language, computer aided software engineering tools in development, client/server architecture, and open system portability.

The ship managements companies and their IT experts can use it to modify for different type of calculation and measurements and other resources for ship as various classification societies use it on their own ways.

I know there are many interesting ERP systems out there - most of them have more or less the same features. I believe, however, that what makes the difference is THE system that gives you the option to do extended customisation so that you be able to cover your company's particular needs. Otherwise the system will not be used at a satisfactory level. It is better to invest at a certain extent of customisation, rather to keep a system inactive.

Hello Alok,
the implementation of an ERP system is a very difficult task. In my opinion the most challenging phase during the life-cycle of an ERP implementation is the integration of all modules that belong to different functional areas. For example, the integration of Accounting system with Purchasing System is a real challenge. You should coordinate a set of different factors such as Vessel Budget, General Ledger Entries upon Goods-Receipt by Vessel (Accrual Entries), General Ledger commitments after the creation of Purchase Orders and so on. I could enumerate more than 100 critical technical factors that influence the successfull implementation of an ERP implementation, although I believe that the commitment of all stakeholders of the project is the most important factor. As for possible SAP implementations, i can't provide you information since here in Greece this product seems not to be very "popular" among shipping companies.
