IT and communications for the deep sea commercial shipping sector

hi everyone,
I am involved in competence development of seafarers and have a question re shipboard training.
Firstly there is a definite interest by owners and managers to move more training onboard ship.
My concern is that the quality of training on board might not be/ is not the same as that onshore.
The question.
How can we ensure that onboard training reaches the same level of quality of that ashore?

Hi, I,m in seafarers training too. We also see there are demands from ship owners towards this trend. Waht we do in Malaysia is that the training required while during the sea phases of cadets are guided by an approved training record book. The officers designated on board are trained ashore to conduct such training. Nevertheless, students still have to return back ashore for the final examinations.

Anyone out there please provide comments on any training requirements for sea and shore staff.

We had two Malaysian ships taken by pirates and finally released after a ransom payment. It is a traumatic experience to the crew onboard as well as staff negotiating during the crisis.

Any comments?
We have a software system designed to help with this, the key I think is ensuring that you close the loop between that which is set up as a requirement ashore and the correct implementation on board and most importantly evaluation of the training event.

Enuring the quality of the training aboard is a difficult topic, especially when considering the time constraints everyone is under. We have made a distance learning course that might be helpful in improving the onbard trainer:

Any questions please let me know
Onboard training could be almost the same quality as that ashore by using self-contained training material, made for self-study in mind.
As you know, marine VHF radio is the seafarer's lifeline. It is possible to learn the vital procedures of marine radio communications by using the Marine VHF Radio Handbook and the Marine VHF Radio Simulator.
Both of these titles are used in classrooms and onboard. Exams ashore are using the same simulator software.

This material was developed for self study. Combination of easy to follow text with practical examples, expert tips and clear illustartions ensure that this difficult subject is made simple and enjoyable.
These are new things, we do not have practical experience, how these things are actually used onboard ships.
Anybody wish to try ? Please let me know.
